چکیده

11 Abstract A common challenge in many situations of computer-supported collaborative 12 learning is increasing the willingness of those involved to share their knowledge with other 13 group members. As a prototypical situation of computer-supported information exchange, a 14 shared-database setting was chosen for the current study. This information-exchange 15 situation represented a social dilemma: while the contribution of information to a shared 16 database induced costs and provided no benefit for the individual, the entire group suffered 17 when all members decided to withhold information. In order to alleviate the information18 exchange dilemma, a group-awareness tool was employed. It was hypothesized that 19 participants would use group awareness for self-presentational purposes. For the 20 examination of this assumption, the personality variable ‘protective self-presentation’ 21 (PSP) was measured. An interaction effect of group awareness and PSP was found: when 22 an awareness tool provided information concerning the contribution behavior of each 23 individual, this tool was used as a self-presentation opportunity. In order to understand this 24 effect in more detail, single items of the PSP-scale were analyzed.

Knowledge exchange as a motivational problem: results of an empirical research program

In many situations of computer-supported collaborative learning, it is a challenge to increase the willingness of those involved to share their knowledge with other group members. To study a prototype of such a situation of computer-supported information exchange, we arranged a shared database setting as a basis of an empirical research program. This knowledge-exchange situation represented a s...

The Effect of CMC in Business Emails in Lingua Franca: Discourse Features and Misunderstandings

The paper argues that everyday exchange of business emails produces a development in the work-group relationship, which, in turn, makes new communication styles possible and acceptable by the users' habit to computer-mediated forms, even in unbalanced professional exchanges. The focus is on the (spoken) discourse features of email messages in a self-compiled corpus of selected computer-mediated...

C AWS: Visualizing awareness to improve the effectiveness of co-authoring activities

Knowledge of the actions of other users is essential to the design of an effective collaborative authoring system. The reasons for this are rooted in the concept of awareness of individual and group activities. This research presents CAWS, a collaborative authoring system that builds upon several areas of research including studies of co-authoring practices, studies supporting awareness in coll...

Shifts in Significance: How Group Dynamics Improves Group Awareness

Appropriate awareness support has been an issue in the area of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) for quite a while. Yet, many challenges like the dual trade-off between awareness and privacy and awareness and disruption still remain. In this paper we present our human-centred approach on how to utilise group dynamics and team development specific information patterns to control awarene...
